what is kundalini yoga & meditation?

Kundalini Yoga (& Meditation) is the Yoga of Transformation! If you don't want to transform your life, don't do Kundalini Yoga ;-)

Kundalini Yoga is a little different than other forms of Yoga that you may have experienced. Although it has the same aim as all forms of Yoga - union of the mind, body and spirit (the word Yoga mean's Union) - the types of movements of the body combined with the breath and mantra are unique to Kundalini Yoga. 

We use a variety of techniques as we practice to clear limitations in our physical, mental, emotional and energetic bodies. We do this by moving Prana (life force energy) through our Chakra System which is an energetic system found along our spine.

We use asanas (body postures), mudras (hand gestures), bandhas (body locks), pranayam (breathing techniques) and mantras (chanting words and sounds) throughout our practice. As we transform our physical, mental, emotional and energetic bodies our life transforms! How could it not?! 

In a typical Kundalini Yoga class we begin by "tuning in" to the energy of our own inner teacher by chanting a short mantra, the Teacher then demonstrates the posture or movement of which the Students begin. The Teacher gives no adjustments to the Student's body other than verbal instruction and encouragement. The Student does the best they can, closing their eyes and going within their own experience. There are short pauses between postures and movements to allow time to integrate the energy. Class finishes with Relaxation and a Meditation to integrate the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual work we have done. At the very end, class is closed by singing a song of blessing to ourselves, our loved ones and the world.  

In class with me you will have mantra sheets to follow along and also with a deeper understanding of the mantra and its effect. I promise its easy and trust me, you don't have to be a good singer. It's all in your intention and vibration!

Kundalini Yoga teachers and students wear all white (although not compulsory for the students, but feel free if you'd like to) as white reflects all that is outside of ourselves supporting us to go deep within during our practice. It's also said to increase the size of our auric body (that is the energy field around us), so watch out in front ;-) We also wear a head covering or wrap to create pressure on the bones of our skull to hold the energy we work with through our practice (again not compulsory for students but feel free to try if you feel drawn to it). 

You'll also see me sitting on a sheepskins which Kundalini Yogi's also practice on as the skin eliminates static electrical interference to our being as we start moving our energy (physical, mental, emotional and energetic) throughout our practice. Again, not compulsory, but an option for you. If you'd like to practice on a sheepskin, feel free to bring one along!

At the end of a class with me during Relaxation, I will play the Gong which creates a sound current, a vibration, which transforms your mental and energetic state without you having to think about it. So anything left over after practice, trust the Gong will clear it for you.

Now just so you know, there's no "getting good" at Kundalini Yoga. So whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro you're still going to have challenges. You won't be able to tell who's a beginner or who's been there forever and as I mentioned, we do most of our movements and postures with our eyes closed so that we can really go into our own experience. So you can eliminate "looking bad" or any "comparisonitis" fears you may have right now :-)

What you can expect to achieve by participating in a Kundalini Yoga & Meditation class may be an emotional release of old wounds or stuck patterns, it's quite likely that you will transform the relationship you have with the thoughts in your mind being able to direct your life more purposefully, you will break through your limitations, tap into a newfound level of inner strength and thus have life after class seem easier and more in-flow, you'll also be able to maintain a sense of peace and wellbeing even during chaos. 

We do this by retraining your Nervous System, your mind, mental attitude and body to go through an experience, rather than avoid and run away, to be present, feel and transcend your outer circumstances. Anything becomes possible!

Kundalini Yoga is Yoga to prepare you for life. For Western life. Busy, demanding, sometimes confusing, over stimulated and somewhat overwhelming. Kundalini Yoga will support you in being able to continue to live your current life in a much more clear and peaceful way. You'll be able to draw from the strength and presence that you generate within your Kundalini Yoga class so that what once seemed a challenge now seems manageable, if not a breeze. 

And the best bit of all ;-) you'll have me up the front supporting you, coaching and encouraging you to go beyond your previously thought limitations. Woo hoo!
